I’m a multidisciplinary visual artist, focusing on themes related to my lived experience of Eating Distress (ED), Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). These conditions mean that rigour, routine & attention to detail are fundamental to my way of life, and therefore integral to my creative practice. My work manifests in multiple forms including installation, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, video, sound, performance and writing. Formally, my work is an exploration of abstraction and the relationship between colour, pattern and composition. I use sequencing and arrangement to indulge my preoccupation with documenting and recording time. I pay close attention to formatting within all my work, for example using tempo, layers, and rhythm to echo thought patterns and physical movements.
In January 2024 I was awarded £28,000 from Arts Council England (ACE) Grants for the Arts Programme to develop and launch artED (https://arted.online), a digital space to share experiences and stories about eating distress, neurodivergence and mental health through art. <arted.online> contains my daily diary archive documenting my health and cultural experiences, as well as autobiographical writing, a mix of podcast- TV- film- music- and audiobook-reviews, quotes, links to other people’s art, everyday inspirations, and useful resources for others living with and caring for someone with eating distress. To celebrate the launch of artED I curated a series of three talks across three venues that brought together health professionals, writers, artists, and curators to exchange ideas, share knowledge and understanding.
My work is regularly exhibited in solo & group exhibitions & is contained in a variety of public collections such as Baltic and Wellcome Collection. I have created several public artworks, have been commissioned to produce site-specific work for indoor and outdoor spaces, and digital platforms including New Writing North and Supercool. I have taken part in national & international residencies and have developed and delivered participatory activities with diverse groups of people.
