Introducing artED

artED – a digital zine exploring eating distress through art practice – is launching in September with a series of talks at venues in South Shields and Newcastle.

The brainchild of artist Helen Shaddock <arted.online> has evolved out of a diary-keeping project that Shaddock began at the start of the pandemic. Initially a way for the artist to stay connected to family and friends, the diaries – documenting Shaddock’s health and cultural experiences – soon gained a following on social media. With a growing reach, and an ever-growing archive (currently standing at over 1800 and counting), they gradually became a way of sharing with increasing openness and humour the artist’s experience of living with eating distress, OCD and autism. <arted.online> contains Shaddock’s diary archive, autobiographical writing, a mix of podcast- TV- film- music- and audiobook-reviews, quotes, links to other people’s art, everyday inspirations, and useful resources for others living with and caring for someone with eating distress.

“As more and more people seemed to connect with my diaries the idea grew to explore them in more detail and show how I make sense of the world through my art. I hope that by sharing my experiences I can support others in similar situations and raise understanding of neurodiversity and eating distress.”

Performances on Saturday from 2pm

Press Release

Two unique locations at Ninebanks in the beautiful West Allen valley are hosting an exhibition of creative artworks as part of the National Heritage Open Days Scheme. The exhibition will feature new work created by internationally exhibited artists in response to the locations of Isaac Holden's Hearse House and St. Mark's Church. The work will cover painting, sculpture, poetry, music, sound, and Victorian history.

John Garner, violinist, will be creating and performing an improvised response to the place. Sarah Pemberton, poet, will perform the poems she has written as a memorial to Isaac Holden and Jim Lloyd will perform a sound piece, Night Community, based on nocturnal recordings of creatures in the churchyard.

Melinda McGarry, a local artist who is curating the exhibition, said ‘this is a stunning and historic corner of the North Pennines and artists were thrilled to be asked to participate with the community to create this unique event. Isaac Holden was a philanthropist and secretly raised money by selling photos of himself to pay for a horse-driven hearse so that people could bury their loved ones with dignity. Sadly, anecdotally we know many people today cannot afford to hold funerals and are now commemorating their losses with just a memorial service’.

J.M. Strange, Professor of Victorian History at Durham University, who is also contributing to the exhibition, said ‘Isaac Holden was in the vanguard of social media; his self- portraits were a novelty of new technology, bringing the photograph into everyday circulation. Photography was Instagram for the Victorians.’

The exhibition also provides a valuable opportunity for displaying local history material. Marina Wallace, Church Warden for St Mark’s for over forty years said, ‘this is something different for us, we are excited to be able to host this exhibition and to feature local archive material in the community hall. Teas and home-made cakes will also be available using our newly refurbished kitchen.’

NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL ART 2 — Newcastle Contemporary Art

Everything Will Be Alright

4-channel sound installation
Newcastle University Arches
16th-22nd January 2023

A multi layered four channel audio installation in which the voices of my mother and I relay phrases of reassurance, in varying tones and volumes, from multiple directions.

Duration: 5 minutes
The piece will be played on the hour, with the first iteration at 6am and the final iteration at 10pm.

I first created this piece in 2016, following the news that my Mum had been diagnosed with brain cancer. At the time I was studying a Fine Art Masters at Newcastle University. Each morning I would walk to the studio and there’d be a soundtrack of internal and external voices going through my head. Some of these voices were comforting, reminding me of how my Mum and I would try to reassure and encourage each other, but other sayings seemed ridiculous and inconsiderate; how a stranger could tell me that “Everything will be alright” even when they knew very little about my Mum’s circumstances? I became interested in the way that the same words can be interpreted completely differently depending on how they are spoken. Initially I recorded my own voice, and then asked my Mum if I could record her voice too. The recording session was a really emotional experience, and as I edited all the footage we didn’t know whether my Mum would be alive to hear it exhibited as a sound installation. I am delighted to say that she was able to attend the exhibition opening and is still very much alive and fighting like a trooper - a truly inspirational woman.
I am fascinated by the power of the context (both physical situation and temporal) to influence the interpretation of the work. I have since exhibited the artwork in a number of different contexts.
